4. Profit made by doggie daycare to burn off bad dogs’ energy:
Some dog owners who feel they can’t manage their dogs never try training, or they may try training and give up on it. Instead, just so that they can live with their out of control dog, they may decide to just lock him up in a crate whenever they are home and then let a “doggie day care”, or “doggie day camp” facility deal with him whenever he’s allowed to move around freely.
Theoretically, day care can have great benefits. Running around outdoors with other dogs, all things being equal, can be a good way for dogs to exercise their bodies and minds and, under perfect conditions, it can keep a dog’s mind and body healthy. Being in a facility that allows the dog room to move around is certainly better for the animal than being left crated for hours. And, in many cases, it can be better than the dog having to stay home alone with nothing to do while his owners work long hours.
Unfortunately, day care facilities are only as good as the people that run them, and there is an absolutely huge variety in how day care facilities (and boarding kennels) are run; how crowded they are; how safe they keep dogs from other dogs’ aggression/bullying; how clean/germ free they are and whether they support housetraining, house manners and proper bonding with people.
The huge increase in popularity of doggie daycare has paralleled the increasing demands of peoples’ careers that keep them away from home for longer and longer hours. And, as people have even less time for their dogs and their career, and online/technical lives demand more and more, we predict this industry will continue to grow dramatically. The doggie daycare business also targets childless two-career couples or singles (often metropolitan) who have lots of disposable income but little time, and are willing to pay anything for their dogs, which they consider their “children”. Rates for basic day care can run as high as $35 (for approximately 8 hours) at facilities in larger cities, with the idea that the owner will bring their dog every workday for the rest of his life.
Some people bring their dogs to day care simply intending for them to have fun and not be lonely. But many other owners now bring dogs to day care for more desperate reasons. They feel their (usually large) dogs are out of control and that they can’t exercise them enough to get them to calm down and act civil in the home. So these owners will bring their dogs to day care to warehouse them and tire them out as much as possible by letting them chase the other dogs around all day. They then hope that when the dog comes home in the evening all he will do is sleep and this is what usually happens.
When day care is functioning at its best, and when structured activities are actively supervised by an adequate number of
